School of Traditional Opera and Quyi

TheSchool of Traditional Opera and Quyi was founded in 2001. It enrolled undergraduate students in 2002 and was granted the authority to confer master's degrees in the traditional opera study in 2023. The school was renamed to the School of Traditional Opera and Quyi in 2024. The traditional opera study was selected as the provincial key discipline in 2011. In 2013, Traditional Opera Repertoire, Techniques for Standard Roles, and Fundamental Techniques were selected as Provincial Quality Courses. The school is a vice-chair affiliate of the Chinese Traditional Opera Education Association and a High-Level Traditional Opera Talent Cultivation Base in Shandong Province. The vibrant and highly qualified 39-member faculty team consists of 2 professors and 18 associate professors. Among the full-time instructors, 9 are master's supervisors. 19 faculty members hold master's or doctoral degrees. 1 faculty member has been selected for the Chinese Talent Program (Youth Cultural Talent) by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and appointed as a Young Expert of "Taishan Scholars." 2 faculty members have secured projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China; 2 have obtained funding for talent training programs from the China National Arts Fund; and 3 have been honored as Outstanding Full-time and Part-time Opera Teachers in the National Top 100 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Several have received the Teaching Award from the Chinese Peking Opera Art Foundation. In recent years, the school has introduced several high-level talents and appointed Peking Opera Performance Artist Meng Guanglu as Honorary Dean, alongside many renowned experts as postgraduate supervisors and visiting professors, continuously enhancing the teaching staff development. Students have achieved outstanding results in major traditional opera competitions organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Areas of Study

(1) Bachelor's degrees:performance (traditional opera performance: Peking opera and Shandong opera), music performance (traditional opera accompaniment: Peking opera and Shandong opera accompaniment), traditional opera and drama literature (traditional opera cultural communication), and quyi performance (Chinese storytelling and drum-singing genres);

(2) Master's degrees:academic degree areas include traditional opera and quyi theory studies. Applied degree areas include traditional opera performing art, traditional opera musical art, and quyi performing art.
